Haute Halloween & Other Mischief
By Katie Shayda · October 29, 2026

I've always loved the preparations for Halloween, especially the thought people put into getting a costume just right. Inspiration can come from an old film, a painting, a favorite character or a piece of clothing that's been waiting for its moment. People will spend weeks searching for the right accessories, perfecting a hairstyle or experimenting with makeup for an evening that lasts only a few hours. I have a great affection for that sort of dedication.

My years working as a makeup artist have given me a certain appreciation for the more artistic side of Halloween beauty. Intricate line work has always fascinated me, especially delicate designs drawn beyond the eyes and across the face. A clean black line can be much less forgiving than a smoky eye. There's little room for correction, and the placement needs to be exact. I love seeing that precision applied with such imagination, especially when the rest of the face is left beautifully simple.

Costumes deserve just as much consideration, although the most memorable aren't necessarily the most elaborate. A beautifully chosen vintage piece, an unusual mask or a clever reference can be every bit as effective as something made entirely from scratch. Good styling matters, of course, but so does the willingness to commit to a character. A sense of humor is always welcome.

The clothes can be every bit as inventive. A well-chosen vintage piece, an unusual mask or a convincing period hairstyle can establish a character without an elaborate costume. I love the attention to historical references and beautiful craftsmanship, although some of the cleverest Halloween costumes rely on little more than a good idea and a stellar sense of humor.

Getting ready for Halloween is different from dressing for a night out. Hair, makeup, and clothing are considered together, and the decisions aren't necessarily about looking pretty or wearing something flattering. A character might call for an exaggerated silhouette, an unusual face, or a piece of clothing you'd never otherwise consider. The pleasure is in experimenting, getting the details right, and allowing yourself to enjoy the process without worrying about whether any of it makes sense for everyday life.

A great Halloween costume can be glamorous, beautifully made, completely absurd, or all three. I love seeing people take an idea seriously enough to get the details right, without taking themselves too seriously in the process. Some of the best costumes are really just very good jokes, dressed exceptionally well. And for anyone who enjoys fashion and makeup, October 31 is a pretty good excuse to have some fun with both.
